Brexit champion and former MP Ann Widdecombe He passed away at the age of 78. Widdecombe was elected to the European Parliament for the Brexit Party in 2019, after serving as the Conservative MP for Maidstone in Kent for 23 years.
He delivered a passionate maiden speech in Parliament on 4 July 2019. With then leader Nigel Farage sitting to his right, the Brexit Party MP said negotiations between EU heads of Government over the leadership of the bloc’s institutions had confirmed that Britain should leave. He also likened Britain’s departure to the emancipation of slaves.
Speaking to the EU Parliament, he said: “I would say, if I need convincing, the best thing for Britain is to leave here as soon as possible. The elections were held this way yesterday because if that is the idea of democracy here, then it is a serious betrayal of every country represented here.”
“Because it’s not democratic at all. And that’s just one of the many reasons why Britain is right to leave here, hopefully on Halloween.”
He also likened Brexit to slaves revolting against their owners and colonies being liberated from empires. In his speech, Widdecombe also complained about the EU’s fisheries policies.
He explained: “There is a consistent pattern throughout history of the oppressed turning against their oppressors, of slaves against their masters, of peasantry against feudal barons, of colonies against empires, and that is why Britain is leaving… It doesn’t matter what language you use, we are leaving and we are glad to leave. After the speech, Brexit Party South East MP Alexandra Phillips said Widdecombe “represents the ignored majority”. He added: “Brave and principled. Our Ann.”
More recently, Widdecombe supported Reform UK in 2023 and served as the party’s justice and immigration adviser. Parterre leader Nigel Farage today paid tribute to his former colleague, calling him a “political giant”.
He told the Daily Express: “Ann Widdecombe was a political giant whose outspokenness is rare in today’s politics.
“When Ann decided to stand for the Brexit Party in the 2019 European Elections, it was a big moment and a huge boost. Voters loved her. She played a decisive role in getting Brexit over the line.
