Rep Harriet Hageman raises alarm over record-low American patriotism

Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., sounds the alarm overvoting It reveals that a record low number of Americans last year were “very proud” of their country.

“In Gallup’s 25-year-old patriotism survey, only 17 percent, or fewer than 1 in 5 American adults, reported being ‘very proud’ to be an American,” Hageman said in a floor speech Tuesday. he said.

“Our enthusiasm for America has been marred by accusations of an unacceptable morality, our self-image tarnished by a new self-flagellation,” he added.

Hageman’s speech, scheduled for next week, argues that the country has a distinct cultural identity that deserves to be preserved and urges readers to rekindle their appreciation for that on America’s 250th Independence Day.

“We must stop pretending that America is just an idea or that we do not have a common culture worth fighting for,” Hageman wrote.

“This does not mean that we reject other cultures or traditions. In fact, America has been one of the most gracious countries in history, welcoming people from around the world to our shores. But by inviting those who want to make our country our home, we do not have to subjugate our American history, culture, and traditions for theirs. Instead, we invite them here to participate and succeed in the American way of life.”

Gallup’s 2025 findings show that only 36% of Democrats say they are “very proud” of the United States; This rate was 62% compared to the previous year. By comparison, Republicans recorded much higher levels among survey respondents at 92 percent.

Independents also reached a low point; only 53% expressed great pride; There was a seven-point decrease compared to the previous year.

Hageman said he believes the findings reflect the thinking of the Democratic Party and its efforts to reinterpret the nation’s founding.

“My friends on the other side of the aisle have worked hard to weaponize our history with slavery to denounce our nation as incorrigible,” Hageman said.

“Today, the left reveres 1619 as the true founding of America. The year when the first slaves were imported to America became the defining moment for a new generation of cultural revolutionaries determined to dismantle our society.”

Hageman said he believes the trend is reversible. In particular, he said that a sense of patriotism could be re-established by refocusing on the founding of the country.

“Hopefully we can reverse these declines by focusing on America’s 250th anniversary and looking at that history with honesty and integrity,” Hageman said. he said.

“In fact, I’m optimistic that the festivities we already enjoy are now inspiring a new sense of purpose in our national identity. And I believe we’re on the right track to making America proud again.”
