PM Modi to Visit US for G20 Summit in December: Sergio Gor

Washington, DC: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said Washington would “love” Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the US again. He also expressed confidence that the proposed interim India-US trade deal will be finalized “sooner than later”.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, Gor said US President Donald Trump remains closely interested in India-US relations. He also emphasized the need to institutionalize the Quartet’s regular meetings at ministerial level.

“Secretary Marco Rubio invited Prime Minister Modi when he visited him… We would like to see him here again. And I know he will come for the G20 in December,” Gor said.

The ambassador said that he recently briefed President Trump about his visit to India and the growing trade relations between the two countries.

“I’ve been with the President for 10 years, so a lot of the conversation was like two friends catching up… but I also told him about my visits to India. I also talked to him about the growing business relationship. We see businesses on both sides coming here and going there every week, and it’s a win-win situation for both,” he said.

Regarding the proposed interim trade agreement, Gor said negotiations were progressing well, although the agreement covers thousands of articles and requires extensive legal review.

“Ambassador Greer has the President’s full confidence and we are getting closer to finalizing this. These are complex legal issues and this is not a one-page document. There are thousands of issues we are working on between our two countries. The fact that we have come this far is a great sign for the relationship and I believe we can complete this sooner rather than later,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of President Trump visiting India, Gor said such a trip is expected next year.

“This is not just any time for the midterms. It has to be next year. We would love to see this happen as soon as possible,” he said.

Earlier, Gor had said that on May 23, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio invited Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House on behalf of President Trump. The invitation was extended during Rubio’s visit to India from May 23 to 26.

The 2026 G20 Summit is scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida, on December 14-15, marking the first time the United States will host the G20 Leaders Summit since 2009.
