Deadline For Filing Appeals Before GST Appellate Tribunal Extended Till July 31

New Delhi: The deadline to file an appeal in the GST appellate tribunal has been extended by a month to July 31, the finance ministry said on Tuesday. The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) was opened in September last year and the government later notified June 30, 2026 as the last date for filing objections to GSTAT.

“The government has extended the deadline for filing an appeal before GSTAT until July 31, 2026. It decided to extend the deadline after receiving representation from various stakeholders who highlighted technical difficulties in filing an appeal due to congestion on the GSTAT portal,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also said that 30,000 objections were filed in the last 15 days alone, reaching 5,500 per day. “Taxpayers are advised to plan their objection applications in advance and not to wait until the application deadline,” the statement said.

The government has already notified 31 state boards of GSTAT and a Principal Board in Delhi. More than 4.80 lakh cases are pending with the appellate authority and all these cases are expected to be filed before GSTAT.

The government had appointed Justice (Retired) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra as the Chairman of the Main Board of GSTAT in May 2024. Since the introduction of GST on July 1, 2017, all disputes between a taxpayer and the GST department were going to the High Courts or the Supreme Court, thus delaying the resolution of disputes. With GSTAT coming into force in September 2025, dispute resolution is expected to be faster.
