June was the hottest on record for England, says Met Office

Last month was the warmest June on record for the UK, the Met Office said.

Temperatures broke the previous record of 35.6C, set in Southampton in June 1976, on three consecutive days last week, with weather officials issuing a rare red warning in parts of the UK.

The new record temperature was provisionally set when the mercury rose to 37.7C at Lingwood in Norfolk on Friday.

It comes after a new yellow heat health alert was issued for the south of England and parts of the Midlands as more warm weather is expected to reach the UK this weekend.

This is a story of breaking. More to follow…
