Honeymoon murder case: SC refuses to stay Meghalaya HC order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi

A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu expressed reservations over the high court order but refused to stay it and stated that Raghuvanshi has been released from jail and is in Shillong as per the bail conditions fixed by the court.
Speaking on behalf of the state, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the allegations against Raghuvanshi were serious and he could not be released on technical grounds.
Mehta asked for a postponement of the high court’s decision, but the bench refused to give this decision.
The bench posted the matter for further hearing upon reopening of the top court.
The Meghalaya government on Thursday approached the Supreme Court against the bail order granted to the prime accused in the case.
Sonam Raghuvanshi, a resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, was arrested in June last year in connection with the murder of her businessman husband Raja Raghuvanshi. The couple went missing while vacationing in Meghalaya’s Sohra district on May 23 last year. Later, Raja’s body was found in a deep valley on June 2, 2025.
Police alleged that Sonam Raghuvanshi conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gain.
On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court upheld the court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi.
