Ronaldo Says ‘Won’t Make Rash Decisions’ Following Last World Cup Game

-Arlington: Cristiano Ronaldo said he would not make a hasty decision about his future after Portugal were eliminated by Spain in their final World Cup match on Monday.

The 41-year-old Portuguese star said on the eve of the last 16 match, in which his team lost 1-0, that this was the last World Cup.

Asked later what would happen next, he said: “This was my last World Cup, yes, but I will have time to think about the rest, be with my family, not make rash decisions and get on with my life.”

The Portugal captain and one of the best footballers in history said: “This is football, this is the life of a footballer.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and you have to move on.”

Ronaldo, the leading goalscorer in men’s international football history, said he would leave the World Cup stage “with a clear conscience”.

“The truth is that the biggest championship I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros) and that is obviously as important to me as the World Cup,” he said.

“That’s why I repeat, I do my best and leave with a clear conscience, that’s all. Tomorrow is a new day and life goes on.”

Ronaldo was a European champion with Portugal a decade ago but has never tasted World Cup glory, the climax of which came in the semi-finals 20 years ago.
