England’s Jordan Henderson officially ruled out after freak fall causes fracture, opts for surgery

A strange mishap on Sunday night brought England midfielder Jordan Henderson’s 2026 World Cup bid to an abrupt end.

Henderson, 36, spent the game on the bench in England’s 3-2 win, but attracted attention when he fell over a billboard and left England writhing in pain at the moment of victory.

Henderson opted to undergo surgery on Monday, bringing an uncharacteristic end to the World Cup campaign for one of England’s veteran leaders.

As the stadium speakers blasted Oasis, Henderson attempted to climb over the pitchside advertising board to celebrate with the traveling fans. He lost his balance and landed awkwardly on his ankle.

Kane, who was unaware of the severity of Henderson’s injury at the time, said: “Yeah Hendo fell there. I think he’s fine. Something about his arm.”

Celebrations quickly turned to anxiety as medical staff rushed onto the field, administered oxygen and lifted Henderson off the field on a stretcher.

Before the accident, Estadio Azteca had hosted a World Cup classic. Jude Bellingham sparked England in the first half before Harry Kane added the penalty. Mexico responded with a Julian Quinones and a late Raul Jimenez penalty.

Henderson watched the match from the bench and received a yellow card in the 98th minute for touchline protests. The match descended into chaos when England defender Jarell Quansah was shown a red card and the Three Lions were forced to hang on desperately.

Henderson remained hospitalized in Mexico City while coach Thomas Tuchel and his team flew to Kansas City to prepare for the quarter-final match against Norway. England will face Erling Haaland’s Norway on Saturday without the suspended Jarell Quansah.
