Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore avoids jail time as part of plea deal
Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore avoided prison time and was sentenced to probation after accepting a plea deal for his actions following his earlier firing from Michigan.
As part of the agreement, Moore pled no contest to misdemeanor misdemeanor use of a telecommunications device, including domestic relations and trespassing. He was sentenced to 18 months probation, subject to random alcohol and drug testing, and cannot own a gun while he continues mental health treatment.

Moore was fired from Michigan for cause in December following an investigation into his romantic relationship with a former employee. Moore, who is married and the father of three children, allegedly went to the staff’s home after he was fired, took butter knives and kitchen scissors from his home and threatened to commit suicide.
Moore was originally charged with third-degree trespassing, stalking and breaking and entering, and breaking and entering without breaking and entering. The trespassing charge was a felony. Moore pled no contest to the misdemeanor charges as part of his plea agreement with prosecutors in March.
Judge Cedric Simpson said in his statements that Moore had previously been given the code to the staff’s flat door. He also said Moore “has no right to spread your pain on him” for what he did that day.
Simpson also spoke glowingly of what Moore’s wife, Kelli, had to deal with that day, stating that it was an “incredible burden”. Moore and his wife hugged each other after Simpson read his sentence.

Moore’s attorney said before sentencing that he “reset himself with his family” and counseled his client before recommending probation and a suspended sentence.
Moore said in his own brief statement that he “takes this process very seriously.” As part of probation, he cannot contact the former employee.
Michigan went 18-8 during Moore’s two-season tenure and had three seasons left on his five-year contract when he was fired. He was suspended for two games at the start of the 2025 season as part of suspensions stemming from Michigan’s forward scouting scandal.

The school first began investigating the relationship between Moore and staff in October. Shortly before she was fired, the woman came to school officials and admitted that the two were in a relationship.
