Telangana Among India’s Top 5 Upper-Middle Income States

Hyderabad: Telangana has emerged as one of the five Indian states classified under the ‘Upper-Middle Income’ category as per the World Bank’s measure of per capita income.

The World Bank classifies countries with a per capita income below $1,175 as low-income countries, while countries with a per capita income between $1,175 and $4,635 are classified as low-middle income, and those with a per capita income above $14,375 are classified as high-income countries.

Delhi ranked first with its per capita income of 6 thousand 217 dollars, followed by Karnataka with 5 thousand 579 dollars. Telangana occupied the third position with $5,407, while Tamil Nadu ($5,329) and Gujarat ($4,734) occupied the fourth and fifth positions respectively. All five states exceeded the World Bank’s minimum benchmark for this category.

Maharashtra’s per capita income is $4,628, Haryana’s is $4,627, while Kerala’s per capita income is $4,610.

Bihar’s per capita income is $984, making it the poorest state in India. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh with $1,403 and Jharkhand with $1,470. All three states have lower per capita income than Nepal and many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
