A cargo plane from the United Arab Emirates disappeared off the Pakistani port of Karachi late Tuesday after descending rapidly and losing communication with air traffic controllers, officials said. In a post published on channel X, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said that search and rescue efforts were continuing in the Arabian Sea for the plane carrying five passengers.
The reason for the disappearance was not immediately known. The Civil Aviation Authority said the Boeing 737 reported a problem with its navigation system at 21.18 local time during a cargo flight from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to Karachi, operated by Karachi-based K2 Airways.
He added that radar data showed the plane descended rapidly and made a sharp change in course at around 9.21pm before radar and radio contact was lost about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
Preliminary data points to a possible crash in the sea southwest of Karachi, flight tracking service Flightradar24 said in a post on X.
The plane is believed to have dropped to approximately 35,000 feet in less than two minutes, according to tracking data.
Pakistan’s Geo News added that the plane disappeared while flying over the Arabian Sea near Ormara in Balochistan.
