The Center on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, said the rainfall deficit had reduced to 12% as above-normal monsoon activity was recorded in the first week of July, and suggested that an El Niño year may not necessarily lead to below-normal rainfall.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that in the context of the progress of the kharif season and the possible impact of El Niño on other sectors of the economy, a high-level review meeting has been convened under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister PK Mishra to review and evaluate the preparatory measures taken in this regard.
At the beginning of the meeting, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials presented the overall rainfall situation from June to July 7, while the director general also gave an update on the status of monsoon rains in the country and the possible impact of El Nino.
There was a delay of nearly 10 days in the onset of monsoon in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
