Lammy refuses to support Liberal Democrat call for Farage’s resignation to be blocked until standards inquiry is concluded
Daisy CooperThe Liberal Democrat deputy leader asks whether the government will stop Nigel Farage resigning until the investigation into him is over. He jokes about how he adopted the view that “leaving means leaving.” And he asks whether the government would support a “Clacton clause” (possibly once the by-election order is changed) to say the investigation into Farage could continue while he is out of parliament.
lammy He says Farage has serious questions to answer. He says he will not be part of Labour’s by-election “circus”. He suggests the by-election will be a two-horse race between Farage and Count Binface.
It does not address the two direct questions Cooper asks.

Lammy grants conditional pardon to Ruth Ellis after admitting she was hanged for murder as a result of harassment
Pam Cox (Lab) said Ruth Ellis was the last woman executed in this country. He was hanged in 1955.
He said the case was “a haunting reminder of a time when our justice system ignored the realities of domestic abuse and control.”
He said Ellis’ relatives campaigned for a pardon after his death.
They demonstrated the importance of the need to rescue women from “destructive cycles of abuse.”
In response, lammy He had an announcement to make.
I am honored to say that His Majesty the King has accepted our recommendation to grant a conditional pardon to Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged.
Although the pardon does not claim innocence of murdering David Blakely, it replaces the death penalty with a life sentence to recognize the existence of a profound injustice in this exceptional case.
Lammy said he hopes this will put some closure to Ellis’ family members watching in the gallery.
Emily Darlington (Lab) asked Lammy if the government would support his proposed amendment to the representation of the people’s bill, which aims to stop deepfakes being used to mislead voters. He said the law would “protect the UK from these destructive tactics used by foreign states who want to see our democracy weakened”.
lammy He said he agreed that legal protections must keep pace with evolving threats.
Lammy says Hillsborough bill will return to Commons ‘in coming days’
cooper requires assurance that security services will be fully covered by Hillsborough law.
lammy He says he’ll arrange a briefing for Cooper on the bill. He says he will return to the House of Commons “in the coming days”.
(The bill has been delayed because the government has not yet reached an agreement with campaigners on the extent to which the bill will apply to security services.)

John Grady (The laboratory) asks: Glasgow city council’s record on tackling child sexual abuse.
lammy He said the council should accept the recommendations of the investigation into this case. And he says the Scottish government should consider launching a public inquiry.
Wisely says the government is taking money from where it is needed and spending it on the welfare bill, which has increased by £20bn this year alone.
He claims that the number of police officers was at a record level when he was Minister of Internal Affairs. “They’re coming down now,” he says.
He says Andy Burnham should condemn Lammy’s plan for jury trials.
lammy He says it can’t be considered smart. He says the country has lost 16,000 police officers under Conservative Party rule.
He defends the government’s record on a range of policies and says he would take it over the Conservatives any day of the week.
Wisely He says Lammy did not apologize and did not say that rapists and pedophiles would not be released early.
He also says Lammy’s plan to limit the use of jury trials is wrong.
lammy He says he has no plans to cancel jury trials. He wisely says it’s necessary to “get down to the details.”
He says there is a threshold change.
Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron also changed the jury trial policy, he says.
Wisely He says Lammy also accidentally released dangerous prioners. Last year Lammy claimed he was affected by accidental broadcasts. But there are now more under Labor than in the entire previous parliament.
lammy “This is rich” from conservatives. They made the neighborhood police miserable. And he says they secretly released the prisoners.
Wisely He says Lammy is a “good man” and should know that this policy is wrong.
If he does not change course, will he at least guarantee that not a single rapist or pedophile will be released early this year?
lammy He says Cleverly isn’t saying what the Conservatives will do. They “sneakly” released 10,000 prisoners early. No impact assessment was conducted.
Mitigating factors exist, he says.
Wisely He says 50,000 prisoners have been released in two years under Labor rule.
And he says Lammy refused to apologize to the victims.
He quotes one victim as saying that learning her attacker had gone out early meant she could barely sleep.
Cleverly says Lammy should have known that this policy was “wrong and dangerous.”
lammy He says the Conservatives have their own early release plan. He says 10,000 people were released early. They made statements one after another. Rishi Sunak then called a snap election, apparently because prisons were full.
Lammy says all MPs want to see criminals jailed. But for this to happen, the government needs detention facilities.
James Wisely He asks whether Lammy will apologize to the victims of rapists and pedophiles who were released early as a result of Lammy’s policy.
lammy He begins by attacking Cleverly’s record in government.
He says every decision the government makes regarding prisoners is influenced by concerns about public safety.
He says the Conservatives have closed 23 prisons.
That’s why he says an early evacuation plan is needed.
jeff smith (Lab) asks Lammy if he welcomes Labor candidate Bev Craig’s promise to provide free bus travel to everyone aged 11 to 18 in the Greater Manchester mayoral election.
lammy He praises Craig and says Labor MPs will want to support him.
