Kalshi traders see roughly 50% odds of a rate hike in 2026 as Fed is split on policy

Federal Reserve policymakers are divided on the path for interest rates — and Kalshi investors appear divided, too, seeing the odds of a rate hike this year at just over 50%.
Prediction market traders on Kalshi estimate there is a 54% chance that the Fed will raise rates this year. This rate is slightly lower than the previous day’s 56%. This contract asks Kalshi traders when an increase will occur and will decide whether it will happen before the end of this year, before July 2027, or before 2028.
Kalshi traders see an almost 80% chance of an increase in 2028 and a 62% chance before July 2027.
These results came a day after the US central bank released the minutes of its June meeting. “Many participants indicated that the appropriate level of the federal funds rate would be within or slightly below the current target range by the end of this year,” the document said.
The base interest rate is currently in the range of 3.5 percent to 3.75 percent from December 2025.
The Fed’s latest minutes also showed that “many participants” think the appropriate level for the interest rate will be “above the current target range by the end of this year.”
The divided perspective of central bank policymakers comes at a time when the United States is grappling with inflation and rising tensions in the Middle East. The personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, reached an annual rate of 4.1% in May, the highest rate since April 2023.
A similar market in Kalshi asks how much interest rate cuts there will be this year and puts the chance of no rate cuts at 76%.
These rates first rose from 68% to 77% on June 16, the first day of Kevin Warsh’s Federal Reserve meeting as chairman. These figures did not change much before and after the minutes were published on Wednesday. The market outcome will be confirmed by the Fed.
