Andy Burnham promised “growth in every postcode”. This is a great and attractive political line; It’s the kind of thing voters want to hear after years of feeling poorer, public services stretched and wages struggling to keep up with the cost of living. It’s also a line that tells us a lot about Burnham’s politics. He has long argued that Britain is too London-centric, Whitehall is too slow, and too many decisions about towns and cities are being made by people who don’t live there.
