“Shameless” star Emmy Rossum admitted she ignored glaring red flags when her then-boyfriend’s alleged ultimatum led to a rushed, secret wedding.

Rossum admitted that she accepted the marriage ultimatum at age 21, kept the wedding a secret, and was already considering divorce before saying “I do”Call his father. She had been dating Interscope music executive Justin Siegel for several months after working together while recording her debut album, “Inside Out.”

Rossum said the hurricane decision came during one of the most emotionally vulnerable periods of his life. She recalled how the ultimatum Siegel allegedly gave her in 2008 quickly turned into a marriage when she had to travel to Mexico for six months to shoot the movie “Dragon Ball Evolution,” which she now realized was motivated by fear rather than love.

“And I remember the day I went away to shoot the movie, he said something to me: ‘I don’t know if the relationship can last the distance. So maybe we should break up or get married,'” she claimed.

Looking back, Rossum admitted that she ignored what she now sees as glaring warning signs, convincing herself at 21 that if the marriage didn’t work out, divorce would be a no-brainer.

“Well, at that moment I thought to myself, here I am just recovering from two tough heartbreaks. It’s like being abandoned is my core wound. I don’t want it, I don’t want it. It hurts me. And I literally thought…my 21-year-old brain thought divorce didn’t seem that complicated. Like that, it’s probably pretty simple.”

“You don’t plan on divorce beforehand,” host Alexandra Cooper joked.

“One hundred percent,” Rossum admitted.

Within days, the couple quietly married in an impromptu ceremony that Rossum described as far from romantic. Instead of celebrating this milestone, she said she kept her marriage a secret because she already felt like something wasn’t right.

“And so… she literally printed out like a prenup on the internet and had a guy come to my house online,” she claimed. “I found a white turtleneck sweater in my closet and threw it on because it suited me. Right?”

“I don’t hear the smoke detector in my head saying, ‘Don’t do this. Don’t do it.’ You don’t have to do this. No man should say, ‘Let’s get married.’ Do you know what I mean? My intention was not to tell anyone because deep down I knew it wasn’t right.”

Rossum proved those instincts correct. The actress said the relationship continued to unravel while she was filming in Mexico for six months and her husband didn’t even come to visit.

“Plus it’s not that long of a flight. I don’t know what happened… everyone was so dramatic. I don’t know. It’s literally like going; people are going to Mexico for the weekend. Like, what are we talking about?”

When filming wrapped and she returned home, Rossum said it was clear the marriage had no future.

“I was away for six months. When I came back it became very clear that we were not compatible at all.”

Although Rossum kept his marriage a secret from almost everyone, he eventually had to tell his mother; not to share the happy news, but because he needed help ending the relationship.

“I told my mom, ‘Hey, I’m breaking up with Justin and I need a lawyer.’ And she said, ‘You didn’t.’ And I said, ‘I did,'” she recalled.

“And my mom has always been a go-getter,” she said. “My mom says, ‘If someone’s going through a breakup, my mom isn’t working right now. So if you need someone to come over, she’ll send you for a manicure and be like, ‘I’ve got a U-Haul. Go take care of yourself.'”

The divorce was finally finalized in 2010.
