Newport man believed to be carrying crossbow shot by police

A man believed to be carrying a crossbow has been shot by police in south Wales.

Gwent Police said they were called to an address in St Edward Street, Newport, at around 11.55pm on Friday, following reports of threatening behaviour, where a man was seen with a weapon believed to be a crossbow.

They say a 21-year-old man from Newport was shot by police and taken to hospital. His condition remains stable.

Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain said it was an “isolated incident” and police were not looking for anyone else.

“Whilst reports of firearms and weapons-related crime are rare in Gwent, we take all reports of this nature seriously and respond to them in a professional and proportionate manner based on the level of risk posed by the information available,” he said.

Gwent Police said it had referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
