Labrador rescued from Ben Nevis after ‘eating discarded cannabis’

The Labrador rescued from Ben Nevis after eating discarded marijuana has made a full recovery, according to the organization that came to the pet’s aid.

The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team said it was called to help Tokyo, “a generally very fit and active working dog”, after he “collapsed” last weekend.

Tokyo and owner Christina Bluhme were halfway up Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, when the incident occurred.

Ms Bluhme said vets suspected the Labrador had consumed cannabis thrown onto the road.

The Surrey family’s hunting dog trainer thanked the rescue organization for their efforts.

He added: “Without your support I would never have been able to get Tokyo safely off the mountain.

“I really thought I was going to lose him at the time, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your kindness, professionalism and compassion. Thank you for being there when we needed you most. We will never forget it.”

Mount Lochaber Rescue said it was pleased with Tokyo’s “full recovery” and thanked Crown vets “for their support” and “Tokyo’s owner for the update and photos.”

Posting on Facebook after the incident, Ms. Bluhme issued a warning: “Just a little reminder to fellow dog owners; please remember that discarded medications and other toxic materials can sometimes be found in even the most beautiful outdoor spaces.”

Common symptoms of marijuana ingestion include vomiting, inability to stand or walk, swaying when walking, and even tremors and seizures.

If you suspect your dog has consumed marijuana, petMD recommends owners contact a veterinarian.

He also suggests that owners attempt to locate any packaging, as “the more you know about the type of marijuana and how much your dog may have ingested will better help your veterinarian determine next steps.”
