Andhra Pradesh Minister of Industry and Commerce TG Bharat Gupta conducted the groundbreaking ceremony of a sewage treatment plant aimed at stopping Kurnool’s sewage from entering the Tungabhadra river in the presence of MP B. Nagaraju Panchalingala on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Mr. Bharat said that the 35 MLD (million liters per day) capacity plant will be constructed at a cost of ₹ 150 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme and steps have been taken to complete the plant within 18 months.
Mr. Bharat said it was Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s determination to ensure that sewage does not flow into rivers and river waters are not polluted.
He recalled that pilgrims visiting Kurnool during previous Krishna Pushkarams faced difficulties due to sewage flowing directly into the river. The discharge had polluted the Tungabhadra and caused problems downstream. “The treatment plant will solve this problem. The treated water, which will not be suitable for drinking, can also be used for other purposes such as industrial and agricultural needs and will be available at a very low cost.”
The Minister said that the Alliance government is working together for the welfare and development of the people. As part of this, it was implementing ‘Super Six’ plans and accelerating development, including road repairs, and attracting industries to the State.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Bastipati Nagaraju said that there have been significant developments in the state since the NDA government took office. He added that Mr. Bharat is making every effort to transform Kurnool into a “Smart City”.
Kurnool Urban Development Authority (KUDA) Chairman Somisetty Venkateswarlu, Kurnool Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu and others attended the event.
