One person died, two people were missing and 16 people were rescued after a pontoon boat sank near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island on Tuesday, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and city officials said at a news conference.
There were 19 people on board at the time of the incident. Of the 16 rescued, 13 were safe on shore, while the other three were receiving treatment at a hospital in San Francisco.
US coast guard approved Search-and-rescue efforts were “ongoing” Tuesday afternoon.
KTVU Fox 2 caught Video of a red boat partially submerged in water. It was reported that many people received medical attention, but the extent of the injuries remained unclear. Initial reports indicated a fire had broken out on the ship, but San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said at the press conference that there was no sign of a fire.
The ship, described as a “pontoon pleasure boat” by San Francisco fire marshal Lt. Mariano Elias, was about 600 yards (548 meters) from the island when the incident occurred.
Live video from the scene shows a man and a woman wrapped in blankets sitting next to the ambulance.
Spokespeople for the San Francisco Fire Department and the Oakland Police Department did not immediately respond to an inquiry into the origin of the fire.
Millions of visitors flock to Alcatraz Island each year to see the now-shuttered prison of the same name where some of the country’s most notorious criminals were once imprisoned.
