SC flags ‘frustration’ over CBSE’s digital marking system, seeks Centre’s response
CBSE’s OSM evaluation system is a digital grading method in which teachers evaluate scanned copies of physical answer sheets on the computer instead of checking physical paper scripts.

“Look at the extent of frustration of young children,” said a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeking help from the attorney general to deal with the case.
The bench, which also included justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said there were systemic “sluggish problems” in the digital evaluation process.
Judge Bagchi told the attorney general, “We are not hostile, we are asking for your help. There are some problems” and asked for a status report on the case.
The senior legal official told the panel that the individual scoreboard discrepancies mentioned in the defense had largely been resolved, but the government was taking the systemic issues seriously. He said that a single-member committee led by S Radha Chauhan has been constituted to review the evaluation system and recommend necessary systemic changes.

“We do not perceive this negatively,” SG said. He said the committee was currently investigating the complaints.
The bench has now asked the attorney general to inform it about the steps taken by CBSE and listed the matter for hearing next week.
The PIL was filed by Rakesh Binjola through lawyer Laxmikant Matadan Shukla.
The petition seeks directions to the Center and CBSE to frame regulations for conduct of CBSE Board examinations through OSM evaluation system and constitute a high-powered committee to supervise and implement such reforms.
The petitioner also sought directions to grant relief from minimum qualifying marks of 75 per cent or other minimum Class 12 marks criteria prescribed for admission to various courses, besides granting relief in minimum qualifying marks to students who have already received provisional admission or cleared the entrance examinations.
