Jana NayaganA highly political action-entertainer that will mark the beginning of a dramatic election campaign. However, H Vinoth’s directorial has been marred by an ongoing controversy.
The film, which was initially scheduled to release on January 9 ahead of Pongal, was postponed due to the delay in issuance of censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the resulting legal battle.
To make matters worse, the movie was reportedly leaked in High Definition on pirate sites on April 10, 2026 (Friday) and some of its clips were shared by users on the social media platform. This development led to widespread criticism against digital piracy, with popular stars rallying behind the team. Jana Nayagan.

The calm before the storm:
Jana Nayagan It is actor Vijay’s 69th film. Produced by K Venkat Narayana of KVN Productions, the film marks the Tamil superstar’s last outing before he ventures into full-time politics. The film was released with a pooja ceremony on October 4, 2024. On 24 March 2025, the makers announced that the film will be released on 9 January 2026 on the occasion of Pongal. This announcement further increased the expectations as there was a long list of popular Vijay’s movies releasing on Pongal – Coimbatore Mappillai, Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen, Kannukkul Nilavu, Friends, Thirupaachi, Aadhi, pokkiri, villi, Kaavalan, Nanban, jila, Bhairava, Expert And Varisu.

Following the completion of filming, the team began post-production work, which was completed on December 15, 2025. On December 18, KVN Productions applied for a censorship certificate to the CBFC. e-cinema program Portal under Tatkal process. A review committee consisting of five members randomly selected from the list maintained by the Board then viewed the film submitted by the producers on December 19, 2025. The committee recommended that a U/A 16+ censor certificate be granted subject to the producers making the cuts listed by the committee. The producers then made the necessary cuts and the film was re-released on December 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, Vijay wowed his millions of fans at the audio launch of the film held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 27, 2025. “When I entered the cinema, I thought I was building a little sand house here. But you all built me a palace. The fans helped me build a castle… That’s why I decided to stand by them. For the fans who gave up everything for me, I am giving up the cinema itself,” the actor said.
After Vijay’s passionate speech at the event, the expectations for the film increased further. On January 3, a week before the film’s scheduled release, the producers released a trailer for the film; this trailer was surprisingly filled with so many meta references about Vijay’s political foray.
But just 48 hours later, his fate changed. Jana Nayagan has changed completely. On January 5, 2026, the CBFC Regional Officer informed KVN Productions that the CBFC chairman had decided to send the film to a revision committee following a complaint received. It should be noted that the producer was not informed about who the complainant was, only about the visuals in the film that allegedly disrupted religious harmony.

The complaint stated: “Dear Sir, I have learned that the Tamil movie Jana Nayagan, which is to be released across India, has been approved by the Examination Committee in Chennai without following due procedures. The movie showed images and dialogues showing that foreign powers are creating religious conflict on a large scale in India, which could disrupt the religious harmony of this great country.”
The statement continued as follows: “There are many references to the Army in the film, but there was no defense expert in the Review Commission to address these issues. During the review of the film, there were procedural deficiencies that constitute a serious violation of the Cinematograph Law and Rules. I am a member of the APM (Advisory Board Member) and I watched the film on December 19, 2025, but my objections were not taken into account during the review of the film. Therefore, we kindly request your intervention. Follow the procedure and instruct the competent authority to re-examine the film.”
The production company filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court without any delay, directing the CBFC to issue the U/A 16+ certificate within 24 hours. This is where it’s released Jana Nayagan It turned into a huge debate.

Fight in the courtroom:
Justice PT Asha on January 6 asked Additional Solicitor General ARL Sundaresan, representing the CBFC, to produce records, including the complaint received on January 7 regarding the content of the film. In the petition filed, the producers alleged that the CBFC did not respond to the production company for nearly 10 days after the film was re-submitted with necessary changes suggested by the committee.
On January 7, the judge heard arguments on behalf of the CBFC as well as the production company. Sundaresan argued that before the issuance of the censor certificate, under the Cinematography (Certification) Rules, 2024, the CBFC chairman had full authority to send the film to the revision committee on a complaint by a committee member. Meanwhile, senior advocate Satish Parasaran, representing the producers of the film, argued that the recommendation of the majority of four members should prevail over the minority view supposedly adopted by a single member of the committee.

The judge reserved his orders. Later in the night the producers Jana Nayagan The announcement, which confirmed that the film would not be released on January 9, sparked widespread backlash from fans.
However, there was a glimmer of hope for the star’s well-wishers on January 9 when Justice Asha directed the CBFC to issue the U/A 16+ certificate. The judge wondered how the review committee member who made the complaint could do so after the producers had implemented the changes recommended by the committee, of which he was one. But the relief lasted less than a few hours, as the court’s First Division Bench withdrew the decision a few hours after it was announced. The bench felt that the single judge should have given time to the CBFC to file a counter-argument before passing the orders.

Long wait:
A day after the makers announced the postponement of the release, many prominent film personalities including actors Silambarasan TR, Ravi Mohan, Sibi Sathyaraj, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and Shivathmika Rajashekhar and directors Venkat Prabhu, Karthik Subbaraj and Ajay Gnanamuthu came out in support of Vijay.
Due to the uncertainty of the fate of the film’s release, social media was awash with rumors and speculations. By January 9, fans and followers of the TVK chief started speculating that the series would be stopped from airing. Jana Nayagan It was either the work of the DMK, the party ruling the state, or the BJP, the party ruling the centre; both of whom Vijay had called as opponents of his party in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Facing immense pressure due to the postponement of the film’s release, producer K Venkat Narayana apologized to Vijay’s fans. The producer said that he has full confidence in the judiciary and is hopeful that the film will be released as soon as possible. “Thalapathy Vijay sir deserves a grand farewell for the love and respect he has earned from his fans and industry members.”
On January 12, the production company filed a lawsuit against the Supreme Court of India’s stay order. However, the Supreme Court on January 15 refused to entertain the petition, questioning the “bubble speed” with which the single judge had directed the issuance of the censure certificate on January 9. It also requested the Division Bench of the Madras High Court to make efforts to dismiss the CBFC’s writ appeal on January 20.
The First Division Bench reserved the orders after hearing both parties. On January 27, the panel annulled the single judge’s January 9 decision. “The board further held that the writ petition was not maintainable at all as instead of seeking a writ of certification to set aside an order passed by the CBFC chairman on January 6, 2026, referring the film to a nine-member revision committee, it sought a writ of mandamus seeking directions to the CBFC to issue the certificate.” Hindureport on development.

On January 30, the CBFC issued a notice to the Supreme Court that the order should not be passed without being heard. Shortly after, several news reports stated that KVN Productions had agreed to appeal to the review committee. While the production house did not make any statement regarding its decision, CBFC also refused to comment on the issue, citing the confidentiality clause.
On February 9, it was learned that the makers had agreed to approach the revision committee to clear the legal hurdles and therefore submitted a letter to the High Court Registry to withdraw the writ petition filed against the CBFC. The court allowed the withdrawal the next day.
Since then, there has been no development regarding the review of the film by the revision committee. According to reports circulating on the Internet, the committee will review the film this week.
The movie was leaked online
