SC to hear producer’s plea on ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ release

The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, took cognizance of a submission by senior advocate Devdatt Kamat seeking an urgent hearing.
The senior counsel requested the bench to list the matter on Thursday but the court said it would take up the matter on Friday.
The apex court had observed that objections to the portrayal of Lord Jagannath required a detailed judicial review before the film could be released.
The HC delegation included Mahesh Kumar Sahu from Angul, Dr. from Puri. It had passed the interim order while hearing a public interest litigation filed alongside Pramod Kumar Acharya and Nimapada’s Umashankar Acharya.
The petition sought a direction to cancel the film’s certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and restrict public screening of the film in Odisha.
The petition objected to fictional depictions of Lord Jagannath’s childhood, dialogues, adventures and battle scenes, arguing that these were contrary to Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana and long-standing temple traditions.
