FIRST ON FOX: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is asking Florida authorities to turn over a Bangladeshi illegal immigrant accused of killing his sister-in-law who was deported during the first Trump administration, illegally re-entered the United States, and was released by the Biden administration.

DHS told Fox News Digital that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer against Akbor Miah, who allegedly used the alias Shahidul Islam, requesting that he be placed in federal custody after his criminal case in the state is completed.

Miah first entered the United States in 2016 during the Obama administration, according to DHS. He was arrested by ICE in February 2018, and an immigration judge issued a final deportation order later that year.

But officials said Miah illegally re-entered the United States (a federal crime) after being deported to Bangladesh in January 2019 during the first Trump administration and was released into the country by the Biden administration on March 19, 2022.

DHS said ICE filed a detainer requesting that Florida authorities transfer Miah to federal custody after the conclusion of the state criminal case so that he could face immigration enforcement following any sentencing in the murder case.

According to authorities, Monica Islam disappeared on May 2, 2025, after leaving the Eustis grocery store where she worked with her brother-in-law, Miah. Hours later, he was found dead of a gunshot wound on the side of a road in Mount Dora.

Investigators found Monica Islam’s DNA from Miah’s vehicle, a bullet lodged in the passenger door and evidence of a shattered passenger window, prosecutors said.

Authorities allege Miah fled to New York after the murder, then was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited to Florida, where he faces first-degree murder charges.

“This illegal alien from Bangladesh was charged with murder for allegedly shooting his own sister-in-law in Florida,” DHS acting assistant secretary Lauren Bis told Fox News Digital. “He then thought he could escape justice by fleeing to a sanctuary state like New York. Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien was apprehended and removed from our streets. ICE placed a hold on him so he can never be released from our country again.”

Fox News Digital previously reported that a Lake County grand jury indicted Miah on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder and that prosecutors were seeking the death penalty.

State’s Attorney Bill Gladson said investigators uncovered evidence that Miah conducted numerous suspicious online searches on the morning of the murder.

Prosecutors also allege he rented a vehicle and drove to New York before authorities tracked him down in a joint effort involving local, state and federal law enforcement following the shooting.
