NSW police officers under review after taking keys from unattended ute outside Sydney cafe

A routine coffee run took a strange turn for a Sydney motorist after police were filmed taking the keys from his unattended car while he was in a cafe, prompting scrutiny of the officers’ actions.

In the videotaped incident, the man is seen parking his car outside the cafe, his keys still in the ignition, as he goes in to get coffee.

A few minutes later, a group of officers sitting inside were seen approaching the vehicle and removing the keys.

The driver appeared to return a short time later and the officers, some of whom were seen laughing, looked around for his keys before talking to him and eventually giving them back.

The footage then showed the interaction continuing, with several officers gathering around the man as he continued to speak to him as he prepared to leave.

Under NSW law, drivers who leave a vehicle unattended and move more than three meters away with the keys in the ignition can be fined $114.
