Tourist convicted of killing fellow Brit with single punch outside Greek nightclub is extradited back to the country where he’s facing 12 years for manslaughter

A man found guilty of murdering a British holidaymaker with a single punch during a drunken brawl outside a nightclub will be extradited to a Greek prison.
Father-of-two Matt Jeffery, 35, from Yeovil, Somerset, was punched in the street outside the Sizzle bar in Zante’s seaside resort town of Laganas on May 23, 2019.
Mr. Jeffery, who was on his way to a bachelor party with his friends, fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. He died from his injuries five days later.
Luke Brownsdon and a second man were arrested and charged, but were allowed to leave the island.
Both were convicted in absentia in a Greek court in March 2023, and Brownsdon, who was accused of delivering the fatal blow, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing fatal bodily harm with serious intent. The other defendant was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
On Friday, Westminster Magistrates’ Court ordered Brownsdon extradited to Greece to serve his sentence.
He has been held in a British prison since his arrest by National Extradition Service officers in April 2025.
CCTV footage of the scene showed an initial fight broke out in the nightclub between Mr Jeffery and his friends and another group they did not know from Essex.
Mr. Jeffery and his group left shortly after, but the Essex group followed the men outside.
In the footage shot on his mobile phone, two men can be seen approaching him before he is shot in the face.

The incident occurred outside the Sizzle nightclub in Zante; Here Mr. Jeffery was punched before falling and hitting his head on the pavement.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that after being arrested by Greek police, Brownsdon told police he had been drinking and could not control his behavior at the time.
He also told the court that he was not provided with an interpreter during police interrogations, that he was not given fair representation at his trial in Greece and that he was unaware of when the hearing would take place.
Brownsdon also argued that his extradition would be contrary to Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights due to overcrowding in Greek prisons.
The court heard that the prison he would be sent to in Patras was currently at 139% occupancy.
Brownsdon, who objected to the extradition request in June, now has seven days to appeal the decision.
He has also filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence, which is expected to be heard in Greece in November.
Avon and Somerset Police told the Daily Mail an investigation has been launched into Mr Jeffery’s death.
Police said in a statement: ‘We have launched an investigation into the death of Matthew Jeffery, 35, of Templecombe, who died after being attacked on the Greek island of Zakynthos, Laganas, in May 2019.
‘Matthew’s death is subject to criminal investigation in Greece and there are ongoing legal proceedings.
‘Officers from our Major Crime Investigation Team are conducting active investigations and will continue to liaise with Greek authorities.
‘A specialist family liaison officer is keeping Matthew’s family fully informed of any developments.’
At the time of the incident in 2019, Mr Jeffery was going stag with a group of close friends.
