Formula 1 leader Kimi Antonelli celebrated his father’s birthday by taking pole position at Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes teammate and championship rival George Russell on the front row.

McLaren’s reigning world champion Lando Norris was third fastest but dropped 10 places in the standings, moving Russell to fourth alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the winner of the previous race at Silverstone.

Mercedes has taken pole position in all 10 races so far this season, while 19-year-old Italian Antonelli has achieved six of them.

“It’s a nice birthday present for your dad,” said race engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington on the team radio.
