Man, 28 due in court for murder of Ann Widdecombe
In a statement read outside New Scotland Yard, Laurence Taylor, head of the UK Counter-Terrorism Policing Service, said: “I would like to make clear that our investigation [Kerry]”His motivations and the wider activities in which he may be involved remain to be determined.”
“As with all murder investigations, understanding the ‘why’ is an important part of our investigation,” he said, adding that it was “a particularly intense and complex investigation.”
Investigators are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, Taylor said.
He added that counter-terrorism teams had collected a “vast amount of information” over the past week, leading to more than 800 lines of inquiry.
The ongoing investigation is being carried out by South East Counter Terrorism Police, supported by Devon and Cornwall Police.
Frank Ferguson, of the Crown Prosecution Service’s (CPS) special crime and counter-terrorism section, said: “Our prosecutors worked closely with the police to establish that there was sufficient evidence to take this case to court and we will continue to work with them as the investigation progresses.”
“We remind all concerned that the proceedings against the defendant are active and the defendant has the right to a fair trial,” Ferguson said.
“It is vital that no news, comments or information is shared that could harm these operations in any way.”
Widdecombe’s career in politics spanned decades.
He served as Conservative MP for Maidstone in Kent for 23 years and was appointed to ministerial posts in Sir John Major’s government in the 1990s.
Following his departure from the House of Commons, Widdecombe appeared on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and came second on Celebrity Big Brother eight years later.
He later represented South West England as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Brexit Party and joined Reform UK as party spokesperson in 2023.
Days after Widdecombe’s death, mourners gathered in Haytor Vale to remember the 78-year-old.
