B&M fined £2m over food hygiene failings at Birmingham shops
B&M Retail Ltd has been fined £2 million for serious food hygiene breaches, including food items gnawed on by rats, at three stores in Birmingham.
The company was sued by Birmingham City Council after complaints led to an inspection by the environmental health service between November 2024 and October 2025.
The council said these locations included St Andrew’s Retail Park, where officers found mouse droppings and gnawed items on sale.
Rat infestations were also found in Priory Square Shopping Center and The Fort Shopping Park.
The council said the inspections were carried out following a complaint from a member of the public who “reported seeing a mouse in the shop” in Priory Square.
The firm admitted the offenses at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court and was fined £2 million at a sentencing hearing on 13 July.
B&M Retail Limited was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £18,104 and a victim surcharge of £2,000. It was said that the fines and expenses were to be paid within 28 days.
