Govt. to sell quality rice at subsidised prices through rythu bazaars from August 1

In a bid to stabilize rice prices and provide convenience to consumers, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to sell quality rice at subsidized rates from August 1 through 130 rythu markets and around 500 private stalls across the state.

Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Nadendla Manohar announced the decision after reviewing prevailing rice prices with representatives of rice millers at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Under the initiative, BPT/KNM Super Fine rice will be sold at ₹52 per kg, while Grade I Raw Rice will be available at ₹50 per kg, approximately ₹10 lower than the current market price.

The minister said the government had received feedback from consumers regarding the steady increase in rice prices, prompting intervention.

Mr. Manohar attributed the rise in prices to factors such as global geopolitical developments, concerns over El Niño, rising transportation and operating costs. He said the government was committed to ensuring price stability and that a similar intervention by the coalition government earlier had yielded positive results.

The subsidized rice will be sold through stalls run by rice millers’ associations in the region, under the supervision of the Civil Supplies Department. The government plans to introduce biometric or Aadhaar-based authentication on purchases to prevent diversion and ensure that genuine beneficiaries receive the rice.

The minister said rice millers have agreed to participate in the program directly, eliminating intermediaries, and will allocate 10% of their stocks for sale through private stalls. They also assured the government that adequate supply would be provided to urban areas and regions where paddy production is low.

Mr. Manohar said the initiative will provide quality rice to the public at affordable prices and will also help stabilize the market. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to promote the “AP Brand” by strengthening the state’s rice sector, improving quality standards and expanding exports of premium Andhra Pradesh rice.
