LeBron James announced on Friday (US time) his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers for a record-extending 24th NBA season.
The league’s all-time leading scorer spent the last eight seasons of his glittering career with the Los Angeles Lakers, reaching the championship in 2020 after two separate years with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four with the Miami Heat.
James wrote on social media: “This is my final decision. I’m not going for the money. I’m not going for the family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete and win and have the chance to experience the feeling of winning another championship.”
“I believe I can help the Philadelphia 76ers become a championship team, and I am excited to energize a new fan base and begin this incredible journey one last time.”
The 41-year-old James, who broke Robert Parish’s record for most regular season games played in his career last March, has continued to perform at an elite level despite his age.
Last February, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games, breaking a league record and earning his 22nd consecutive All-Star selection.
