A man who shot at the police was found dead after a gunfight, and a police officer was shot and injured in the melee. Police were called to a domestic violence incident at a property in Yengarie, near Maryborough, Queensland, about 5.45pm on Friday.

A 45-year-old man allegedly approached the officers and fired at them.

A first-year police officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Special police arrived at the scene at 21.20 and found the 45-year-old man dead during a search of the property.

A crime scene was set up where power to more than 100 homes in the area was cut off for several hours due to safety concerns.

The 36-year-old police officer was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

A union spokesman said: “He is receiving specialist medical care and QPS has taken responsibility for informing his immediate family.”

“The QPU Critical Incident Team is also providing assistance.”

The incident will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command under the supervision of the Crime and Corruption Commission and a report will be reported to the State Attorney.
