Chuck Russell, director of The Mask and The Blob, dies aged 74 | Film
Director Chuck Russell, who helped launch such actors as Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson into Hollywood’s A-list, was found dead at his home in San Diego, California, on Wednesday. He was 74 years old.
Russell has directed many blockbuster films throughout his decades-long career, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, and The Mask. In 2002, The Rock appeared in his first leading role in the movie The Scorpion King.
The local fire department was called to Russell’s home on Wednesday afternoon for a report of an unconscious male, the principal’s family said in a statement. TMZ. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Diversity; cause of death not confirmed.
Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, Russell first entered the film industry as an executive producer on the 1981 cult slasher Hell’s Night starring Linda Blair, then co-wrote the 1984 science fiction adventure Dreamscape, directed by Dennis Quaid.
His directorial debut came in 1987 with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which Russell also wrote. The film is being hailed as a return to form for the horror franchise, following mixed announcements regarding 1985’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.
Following the 1988 remake of the cult B movie The Blob, Russell found major success in Hollywood with the 1994 blockbuster The Mask, which catapulted Carrey and Diaz into global stars. The collaboration with George Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic company earned the film acclaim for its practical effects and an Academy Award nomination.
The Mask was originally intended as a horror movie. “New Line wanted another shocking horror movie,” Russell says in question “The Mask had a pretty scary comic book. I said it was going to be a lot like Freddy Krueger. It’s going to be scary.” Russell won his argument with the studio, and the film grossed more than $350 million on an $18 million production budget.
Russell then worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger on the 1996 action film Eraser and the 2000 horror film Bless the Child, starring Kim Basinger and Christina Ricci. In 2002, he directed The Scorpion King, a spin-off of the popular Mummy adventure films.
The director’s last film was 2024’s Witchboard, a remake of the 1986 horror film starring Tawny Kitaen.
