Things are hotting up in the pool
North Ryde’s Andy Salmons thinks “If the Australian U/19 underwater hockey team (C8) is ‘on fire’ as Matt Petersen reports, climate change must be even worse than reported”, while Tumbi Umbi’s Helen Lewin asks: “Am I the only one confused about this activity? Perhaps other Col8ers in the know would like to pool their ideas on the rules of the game to enlighten this stupid duck.” Grandma might add, Peter Miniutti wasn’t far off the mark. The British actually call it Octopus.
“I spent sleepless nights after his latest ABC interview wondering if Barnaby Joyce actually had a dog,” says Toby Waters of Emerald Beach. “At the risk of infecting my fellow readers with insomnia, may I carefully ask: If Barnaby doesn’t have a dog, should he get one? If Barnaby has an imaginary dog, would it be less or more difficult to train than the average dog? If Barnaby has other imaginary pets, did he tie them up before his interview?”
“I am a dog whisperer,” explains Barbara Stacey of Scarborough, WA. “So, during COVID, I interviewed a dog every day and posted pictures and a paragraph on my Facebook page. I would kill to interview Stella.”
“Of all the packaging in the world, why are Band-Aids the hardest to open?” asks Gary Hay of Bella Vista. “It’s a bloody operation that’s usually done with one hand.”
Traveling overseas is a study in subtext for Balgowlah native Peter Berman: “My wife and I are both lawyers. When we travel abroad we always visit a court and watch a hearing. We once watched a hearing in Oslo where we did not understand a word, but we saw how important non-verbal communication is in advocacy.”
“Jane Page’s (C8) mention of hedgehog patties brought back memories of my ninth birthday dinner after my mother searched fruitlessly for chicken in Sydney,” writes Katrina Avery of Fullerton Cove. “When I looked at the pressure cooker recipe book, hedgehog patties seemed like they would emerge as a suitable alternative. I had never thought of them or tasted them in the 70-odd years since.”
The last word on the FIFA World Cup belongs to Balmain’s Tim Parker: “Australia’s defeat of Türkiye in the World Cup may not have changed the outcome of the Gallipoli campaign (C8), but at least this time it was the Turks who could not cross the (Patrick) Coast.”
