Commonwealth Games 2026: Gymnast Reuben Ward goes from Glasgow dreamer to Scotland gold medallist

As he touched down, his coach, Jake Seager, got down on one knee to celebrate the pair embracing. It wasn’t official yet, but they knew.

“I like to imagine the best possible scenario is to win,” Ward added when asked what he was thinking about as he laid his head on the pillow Saturday night.

“It kept me awake a little bit because I was imagining it and feeling the emotions. But it was a mile beyond expectations.

“Falling short on Friday was heartbreaking and I’m so overwhelmed, man. I can barely put the words together.”

It could be even better. On Monday, he goes out there and throws a punch and then becomes a real medal contender.

His celebrations will have to wait for now, but by Tuesday Ward could be on any bonnet with his Scotland team-mates in Glasgow.

“It’s like eating hotel food tonight and probably having a pretty bad night’s sleep,” he said. “So I’ll come back tomorrow and try to relax and keep my routine.

“On Tuesday, after the competition, I will be celebrating the big day with the team and my kids. I love them so much and it was so special that they finally came to see me while I was wandering around the arena.

“I hope we get to experience a bit of Glasgow.”
