Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United with immediate effect.

Newcastle have been in talks with candidates to replace Howe, including Al Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle. The 38-year-old German was previously in charge of Red Bull Salzburg from 2021 to 2023 and has since managed Saudi Arabia, where he won the Asian Champions League in 2025 and 2026. The expectation is that Jaissle will be the next coach. His contract is currently ongoing with lawyers. He should be in charge when the team goes to La Manga at the weekend.

Howe led Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years in 2025 and has also led them to the Champions League twice.
But the news of Howe’s departure, while not a surprise after a tumultuous 12 months, has shaken Tyneside.
Having lost star striker Alexander Isak last summer, England winger Anthony Gordon and Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali were sold this summer. Captain Bruno Guimaraes also wants to join Arsenal and the Brazilian is expected to leave if the Premier League champions make an acceptable offer.
Newcastle have bought four players this term but they are all aged 20 or under. They opened pre-season with a draw against non-League Gateshead and a 4-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City on Wednesday night.
Howe said after the game that his focus was on the season opener against Liverpool but the wheels were already in motion for his departure. A club statement is due to confirm that his hugely successful spell at St James’ Park has come to an end.
The former Bournemouth boss arrived with the Premier League’s 19th team in November 2021 following a Saudi-led takeover the previous month.

However, last season was a difficult one and despite reaching the last 16 of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, a 12th-place finish reflected a decline in performance.
Howe met with the club’s owners at the summit held at Matfen Hall in April and his intention was to continue this season. However, after careful consideration in recent weeks, he will now take a break from football.
