U.S.-China tariff pause not set, say Bessent, Greer

US negotiators said on Tuesday that a potential extension of a tariff pause between the US and China would not be accepted until it was planned until it was signed on the plan.

The statements came after having negotiations in Stockholm, Sweden, the third tours of the third high discussions since May of the best trade officials for the two countries.

“Washington, DC will talk to DC whether it is something that it wants,” US trade representative Jamieson Greer said after the negotiations ended.

Speaking to journalists at Air Force One, Trump said he would get a briefing about the status of negotiations on Wednesday.

“I just got one phone [Treasury Secretary] Scott Bessent. They held a very good meeting with China and seems to inform me tomorrow, Tr Trump said.

“We’ll either approve or approve. But he felt very good about the meeting, better than he felt yesterday,” he said.

Chinese commercial negotiator Li Chenggang said that the two sides agreed to continue for a 90 -day stagnation in most of the “mutual” tariffs on US goods and most of the Beijing retaliation measures.

This pause will now end on August 12th.

Bessent said that if an extension of the final delivery date to journalists after the talks on Tuesday, the US’s tariffs for Chinese goods will be withdrawn to April levels.

“We call it Boomerang,” Bessent said.

He said that the commercial teams will probably meet again within 90 days.

Bessent gave a positive but opaque assessment of the latest talks. He argued that the positions of the two sides were more “refined” and that their discussions lead to an increase in mutual respect and understanding.

However, he said that the US is not satisfied with China’s continuation of oil from Iran – although Trump gave Beijing to his blessing last month to do it.

On April 2, Trump said that he would apply 34% blanket to Chinese goods as part of the comprehensive global tariff presentation he called the “Day of Independence”. A week later, he said that he would increase Chinese tariffs to 125%, which would be above the tariffs related to Trump’s 20% Fentanyl. China retaliate to US goods for their own tariffs.

Both sides agreed to pause most of the tariffs in May after Switzerland’s first trade meetings in Geneva.
