Nuns’ Arrest Upsets BJP’s Grand Christian Outreach Programme in State

Thiruvananthapuram: The arrest of two nuns from Kerala from the Durg Train Station in Chhattisgarh broke the ambitious Christian social assistance program in the southern state of BJP and aimed to achieve election success in the upcoming local surveys and next year’s parliamentary elections.

After the arrest of the nuns, the major protests exploding in the province made BJP Kerala leadership uneasy. Regional Party President Rajiv Chandrashekhar flew to Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah. BJP also sent a delegation to Chhattisgarh to manage the situation.

However, the silence of the Union Minister Suresh Gopi and the reactions of George Kurian, the cabinet counterpart, angered society.

In the statements to the media, Kurian tried to give a clean Chit to the BJP government in Chhattisgarh: “It was TTE who detained the nuns and captured others. The government has no role.” He also said that the guarantee was rejected because the objection was not presented properly. The Minister also mocked journalists who asked questions over and over again about the rude treatment given to the nuns.

The images of Bajrang Dal activists, including female members, to abuse and humiliate the nuns in the train station, deeply damaged the community seen in the emotional reaction of the nuns and church leaders on the streets of Kerala.

The arrests came at a time when BJP celebrated the success of the Christian social assistance, which played an important role in choosing a significant increase in the vote in various parliamentary segments of BJP’s first Lok Sabha from Kerala. The party believed that BJP and Sangh Parivar had made significant progress in making a connection with a large part of Christians who did not see Parivar as political foreigners.

The appointment of George Kurian as the Minister of Union was also seen as an effort to strengthen relations with the Christian community. Kurian, who was previously vice president of the National Minority Commission, continued strong ties with the church leaders of various Christian sects, and the party believed that its influence would strengthen these connections.

Part of the BJP and the Christian community found a common ground in the issue of ‘Love Jihad’, some church leaders even increased concerns about a new threat called ‘narcotic jihad’, one of the Muslim fundamentalist organizations. They repeated BJP’s accusations of Muslim sedation against the BGB and Congress.

Two years ago, Prime Minister Modi met with senior leaders of the eight Christian sects in Kochi. The leaders of BJP organized a Sneha -wide Sneha -wide Stereotype Sitting, visiting the Christian houses with Christmas and New Year greetings of the bishop houses, church headquarters and PM Modi.

All this warned the Christian community about the new love of BJP, UDF, led by the ruling LDF and opposition congress.

While the nun section leads to a significant deficit for BJP, the party between the Christian community may face great difficulties in re -winning its support and making Shah’s target a reality.
