Major city set to tap into limitless underground energy source — here are the details

A city in Spain is launching the largest geothermal facility in its region in a project that can offer a plan for urban energy systems around the world. Renewable Energy Magazine notified.

The plan in Valencia will use geothermal energy to heat and cool a part of the City of Arts and Sciences, a cultural complex, and will significantly cut energy use and pollution in the region.

Geothermal energy uses and renews the natural thermal energy of the Earth. Unlike the sun or wind power, it provides consistent output and can reduce energy bills for buildings and cities.

Valencia will use a closed loop geothermal system to transfer heat between the scientific museum and underground aquifers, which maintain a fixed temperature (68 degrees Fahrenheit) during the year.

In summer, warm water from the museum will be cooled underground before returning. In winter, the process is reversed, the heat from below to heat the building.

Once the operational, the project is expected to save electricity more than 1 million kilowatt and eliminate 335,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.

Power supply is not new – people used these geothermal features thousands of years To stay warm and clean – but these days are also used to heat and cool homes and buildings through technologies such as heat pumps.

This project stands out to measure technology in an urban, publicly open environment. It is also based on Valencia’s existing geothermal installation network in public buildings, including La Petxsina Sports Complex.

For cities that want to lower costs and carbons, geothermal systems require long -lasting and low maintenance, helping to provide consistent savings by reducing dependence on dirty fuels and grilled power. They also contribute to the cleaner Air, a direct gain for public health.

The project in Valencia is part of a wider revision of art and sciences to make more sustainable, including solar panels, air system upgrades and water efficiency measures.
