In 2005, Carlton was a dinner at Gambaro’s Restaurant at Brisbane for a seafood dinner with Carlton Great Marc Murphy, Lions Leigends Leigh Matthews, Michael Voss, Jonathan Brown, Luke Power, Craig Lambert and his recruitment boss Kinnear Beatson.
He was entitled to play for Brisbane Lions under AFL’s father-son rule, because his father John, who was at dinner, was a legend of Fitzroy who won the best and fair club in 214 games.

Murphy was scared by the company while making a four -year agreement to wear the same colors as Lions. It was an impressive offer, and Murphy was eager to join Lions, who won three of the last four premieres.
However, as 2005 emerged and the draft order was shaped, Victoria clubs secured the first five elections. Probably as the number 1 election, Murphy made a pragmatic decision rather than a romantic decision. He chose to make himself available in the national draft. Carlton used the No.1 elections to hire Murphy, who continued to make the club captain and play 300 games in the dark blue.
