Policy push needed to boost India’s water reuse, says Veolia’s Anne Le Guennec

Encouraging industries to switch from freshwater dependence to treated wastewater could significantly reduce pressure on freshwater resources, according to Le Guennec. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board shows that India produces more than 75,000 million liters per day (MLD) of wastewater, but treatment capacity remains inadequate, creating a huge untapped opportunity for reuse. Globally, countries like Israel reuse approximately 85-90% of their wastewater; India’s estimated reuse rate is below 30%, underlining the scope for improvement.
