Maharashtra Congress Demands Rs 50k Government Assistance For Farmers

Mumbai:On Wednesday, the Maharashtra Congress, after the last heavy rains that caused significant crop damage throughout the state, asked to be declared ‘wet drought’. Harshwardhan Sapkal, President of the State Congress, wrote to Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis and called on the government to provide 50,000 RS financial aid per hectare to the affected farmers.

Congress leader also said that about 17 regions of Marathwada, Vidarbha and West Maharashtra were seriously shot by the rains, and that North Maharashtra and Konkan were also damaged. A few crops have severe losses. In some places, farmers’ animals were washed, he added.
“Although the state government has ordered Panchanamas (damage assessments), the government should put aside all the rules and conditions in this difficult period and provide direct relief to farmers. The Congress Party demands that the families of the victims will be assisted in compassion.”
Maharashtra Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that the crops in 14 lakh hectares were damaged and that the affected farmers provided government assistance after the necessary assessment. The Prime Minister stressed that any aid cannot be explained on the basis of rains in the last four days, but can be done after the evaluation of the damages.
Mr. Fadnvis also said that the situation in Mumbai and other parts of the state was under control. He said that all necessary measures related to disaster management were taken by distributing NDRF and SDRF jaws in areas rented by the heavy rains in the state.
