Private vehicles choke Mumbai’s roads, BEST buses account for less than 1 pc
According to the “Environmental Situation Report 2024-25 of the Bihanmumba Municipality Company, Mumbai’s vehicle population exceeded the 50-lacate sign in 2024-25 and an increase in 2023 from 45,37,211 to 47,59,976 to 2025 in 2025.
The report, which was published at the beginning of this week, said that they have a two -wheeled (59.34 percent) and cars, jeeps and station wagons (28.72 percent), together with approximately 88 percent of the city’s vehicles.
The remaining vehicles contained 5.02 percent automatic pits, 3.27 percent taxis, 0.42 percent goods vehicles, 0.02 percent tractor/trailer and 2.72 percent vehicles.
The report recorded at least 2.94 new vehicles in Mumbai between April 2024 and March 2025.
60.87 percent of the new registered vehicles were two -wheeled devices, 23.94 percent of cars, jeeps and station wagons, taxis and cabins 6.26 percent, 3.06 percent and goods were formed. According to the report, respectively, up to 39.83 Lakh (78.79 percent), respectively, operated it on gasoline, 5.63 Lakh (11.15 percent) on diesel and CNG.Mumbai 4.36 Lakh, LPG and 10.832 only 48,854 electric vehicles were found.
The report also stated that Burhahanmumbai electricity supply and transport (best) initiative operates a total of 2,731 buses by the end of March. These buses include the best 612 and 2,119 operating under the wet rental model.
In particular, 91 percent of the total fleet consists of environmentally friendly CNG and electric buses.
“At the end of 2027, the best fleet will include all electrical buses. This will help reduce the pollution of the city of Mumbai because it will be reduced by 3.18,296 tons CO2 per year by these buses.”
