Person charged with murder in deadly 2023 shooting in Penetanguishene

A 32-year-old from Penetanguishene has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 30-year-old who was gunned down in a parking lot in the North Simcoe town two years ago.

Ontario Provincial Police said Jesse Deschamps was fatally shot on July 27, 2023, in the rear parking lot of the Village Square Mall shopping centre on Poyntz St.

According to a GoFundMe set up to provide financial help to the Penetanguishene man’s family in the wake of his slaying, Deschamps left behind a fiancee and four children.

“Jesse was the main source of income supporting his soon-to-be wife and young kids – ages 12, 7, 5 and 2,” the GoFundMe read. “Jesse will be greatly missed, forever cherished and always remembered.”

OPP did not name the person charged with murder, mischief over $5,000 and obstruct peace officer. The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
