Retirement finances not so super for Indigenous people

8 September 2025 17:20 | News

While more than half of local people died before they reach the pension, researchers found that simple changes in the system could reduce the disadvantage they face.

Levon Blue University of Queensland, Professor Levon Blue, said that everyone deserved to retire with dignity, but the system was not established considering the people of the first nations.

“The retirement income system in Australia was initially designed to meet the needs of public officials at the same time, and it is actually a model that fits one body, Aap said AAP.

Not only the inconsistency affecting the retirement and retirement of the indigenous people in life expectancy.

Peter Anderson, a local Pro-Chancellor and Working Author Peter Anderson, the University of New England, said that the people of Avorijin and Torres Strait Adalı earned up to 30 percent less than non-indigenous counterparts.

Warlpiri and Murinpatha Man also contributed to this situation, higher insecure work rates and economic injustice, including the application of stolen wages, which have been paid little for the labor of the indigenous people.

“For our elderly and the elderly, economic justice is actually accessible for retirement or funds,” Prof Anderson said.

“We have a high earning potential, but we can’t access the system’s money.”

Some employment plans such as Community Development Program (CDP), which was gradually abolished after more than 20 years of operation under various names, did not require compulsory pension payments by leaving the people in the program shortly in retirement funds.

“I was really shocked to my seed, Prof Prof Anderson said.

“From a remote community myself and from there was not even included in the (retirement) speech.”

In addition to voluntary and compulsory contributions to retirement and age pension, the researchers suggested to add another ‘column’ to allow Australia’s three -way pension system, early accumulation and access to retirement.

This was something that could be useful for the first nations and chronic illnesses or disabled people who faced a shorter life expectancy.

Dr Blue said that there are recent changes, including retirement payment during birth leave and early access to retirement during COVID-19 PANDEM, and showed that the system could be changed.

“This is not a new problem,” he said.

“Reducing the age of retirement by trade unions and rights groups and discussed and defended the super for indigenous people, and it has not yet happened.”
