India, Mauritius to work towards facilitating bilateral trade in local currencies: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that after having extensive talks with Navinchandra Ramgoolam from Mauriti, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, India and Mauritius will work to ensure bilateral trade in local currencies.
In his statements to the media, Mr. Modi said that India and Mauritius were two countries, entering close relations between the two countries, but their dreams and destiny are one.
The Prime Minister said that a free, open, safe, stable and prosperous Indian Ocean was a common priority of both India and Mauritius.
“In this context, India is completely determined to strengthen the safety and maritime capacity of Mauritius’ exclusive economic region.” He said.
“India has always been the first respondent and net security provider in the Indian Ocean region.”
Chagos agreement
Mr. Modi also congratulated the people of Ramgoolam and Mauritius to conclude the Chagos Agreement and described him as a “historical victory” for the sovereignty of the island country.
“India has always supported colonization and full recognition of Mauritius’s sovereignty.
In May, the United Kingdom decided to hand over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, including Diego Garcia’s tropical atol.
Britain, after more than 50 years, gives up the rights of the islands. According to the agreement, the UK will have full responsibility for the security of Diego Garcia, which is strategically involved.
Ramgoolam’s visit
Mr. Ramgoolam is currently a state visit to India between 9-16 September. The first visit to India during this period. He will also visit Ayodhya and Tirupati.
Prime Minister Modi visited Mauritius in March.
