Former Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang passes away

Former MEGALAYA Prime Minister Donwa Dethwelson Lapang passed away on Friday, September 12, 2025 in a hospital in Shillong. He was 93 years old.

Rags-Riches story

Late Lapang’s, born on April 10, 1932, was the Rags-Riches story. A road has risen from the construction worker to become the Minister of Meghalaya four times, albeit without completing a period.

Political career

The late Lapang began his political career by objection and winning the Nongpoh Assembly as an independent candidate in 1972, and the year when Meghaya was carved as a state separate from Assam.

He then attended the congress party.

His first duty as Prime Minister was from 1992 to February 1993. He returned to duty in March 2003, but the opposition in the coalition government -led coalition government forced him to resign in June 2006.

In March 2007, he swore for the third time. The following year he swore again on March 10, 2008 after the Assembly elections, but nine days later he resigned because he could not prove his majority in the 60 -member house.

The fourth and last term of office as Prime Minister began on May 13, 2009, following the two -month presidency in the state. He resigned on April 19, 2010.

After establishing a relationship with the Congress Party for more than 40 years, the late Lapang joined the Conrad K. Sangma National People’s Party in 2018. That year he became the chief advisor of the government of Meghalaya.
