Missing worker could be trapped 1km underground after Queensland mine collapses | Queensland

One worker is missing and another is recovering in hospital after a roof collapse at a coal mine.

Police were called to the Curragh coal mine in central Queensland at around 3pm on Friday.

It is thought that the missing worker was in the mine when the roof collapsed and was trapped about 1 km underground.

Queensland Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Tony Perrett said emergency and rescue teams remained in the area and were doing everything possible.

He said that after the collapse, two workers were rescued safely and one more worker was trapped.

“My thoughts are with everyone involved, their loved ones and the entire mining community,” Perrett said.

Police confirmed on Saturday morning that one of the workers was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the missing man has not been found.

The Curragh coal mine is located north of Blackwater, approximately 200 km west of Rockhampton.

The field covers approximately 256 square kilometers in two separate mines and has been operating since 1983.

Rescue teams will continue their search efforts on Saturday.
