Nine people are being treated for life-threatening injuries following a stabbing on a train near Cambridge in eastern England, police have confirmed. Two suspected attackers have been arrested and counter-terrorism officers are assisting with the investigation, local media reported.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described it as a “terrible incident”.

British Transport Police (BTP) said its counter-terrorism units were supporting the investigation as they worked to establish the full circumstances and motive behind the attack, The Guardian reported.

“We are conducting an urgent investigation to establish what happened and it may be some time before we are in a position to confirm further,” BTP Chief Inspector Chris Casey said in a statement.

“It would not be appropriate to speculate about the causes of the incident at this early stage,” he added.

According to Cambridgeshire Constabulary, armed officers were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of the incident at Huntingdon station at 7.39pm (local time) on Saturday.

Police confirmed that “Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested.”

The East of England Ambulance Service said it launched a “large-scale response”, sending multiple ambulances, tactical commanders and hazardous area response teams to the scene.
“We can confirm that we have transported multiple patients to hospital,” a spokesman said.

Police said the attack took place on the train service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross at 6.25pm ​​local time, shortly after the LNER train left Peterborough station.

National Rail said Huntingdon station was closed and all lines were blocked. According to the LNER, services in the area are expected to be disrupted until Monday.

“We are experiencing major disruption to the LNER route. Emergency services are dealing with an incident at Huntingdon station; all lines are closed. Our advice is ‘Do Not Travel’. Please postpone your travel where possible.”
