Capt. Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said firefighters responding to a house fire on July 24 found heavy smoke in the house and eight people dead. A video posted by WZZM 13.
Sparks described the situation as a “complex incident” and said some of the victims in the home suffered gunshot wounds and it appeared the fire was set deliberately.
He said that the ages of the children in the house ranged from approximately 5 to 15 years old.
Michigan State Police said arson investigators were also at the scene of the home in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township and were assisting with the investigation to determine the cause of the fire and deaths. Investigators are investigating whether the incident was a murder-suicide and expect additional details and identities to be released over the weekend or July 27, he said.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools released a statement from Superintendent Kristin Perkowski: “We acknowledge with deep sadness the reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven County earlier today that claimed the lives of multiple people, including several school-age children.”

“Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating event and tragic loss for our community,” the statement said.
Sparks said there is no threat to the public and they are not looking for suspects. Inspectors found heavy smoke and smoke damage to the home, but there was no apparent structural damage.
“Bad things can happen in any society and, you know, this is a tragic event,” Sparks said. According to Zillow.com, home values around Riverside Trail range from $500,000 to $700,000.
Sparks said the sheriff’s office had no records of previous searches of the home.

The neighbor reflects
Mark Brininstool told USA TODAY that the scene in the neighborhood along the Riverside Trail on July 24 was “unlike anything he’s seen” in the nearly 24 years his family has lived in their home a few doors down from where the fire occurred.
Brininstool said the neighborhood was off the beaten track, but “it flipped yesterday.”
For neighbors, he said, there was “disbelief, shock and a lot of sadness,” along with many unanswered questions. “The fact that the family no longer exists is shared among all neighbors as extremely, very sad.”
For Brininstool, it was also a moment of reflection.
He said many families in the community, including his own, are left to their own devices other than waving as they walk. “Maybe if we can take something away from this, you know, it’s being intentional about trying to get to know each other better. I know I’m going to be intentional whenever possible and double down on those efforts.”
